A friend of mine mentioned that he thinks that the spirit of communion has been lost - the idea of being communal is no longer there when people are drinking from individual plastic cups. Jesus shared his cup - we can't share ours? It seems to be more about the ritual that the communion. What do you think?
communion (from merriam-webster): an act or instance of sharing

In responce to the mode and time of communion, First let us discuss the time, from Acts 20:7 we learn that the disciples performed it on the first day of each week. but in Acts 2:46 it was performed daily.
in the beginning it was performed by the disciples in the evening at the close of a meal eaten in common, called the Agape - or love feast, but was afterward separated from the Agape by Paul on account of the abuses connected with it, and thus observed in the morning.
Thus in scripture there is no explicit time to perform Communion
And as for the drink there is no explicit command - "Thus do ye, as oft as ye drink" allowing latitude.
The super is taken as a remembrance of Christ: --It is a proclamation, the supper not only commemorates but proclaims the Lord's death. The words, "shew forth" in 1 Corinthians 11:26 meat to "Proclaim", that is, telling news to all withing hearing.
--It is an anticipation, the supper presents us with a threefold view of Christ and the believer
a- Past- Calvary, the lords death b- Present- As often as as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup ye do show the Lords death. c- Prospective- Till he comes
--It is a sign or symbol of the saving truth of the gospel, thus it is by this rite that believers demonstrate the reality of salvation and bear witness to the power of Christ to deliver them from all iniquities
--It is a seal to the believer's privileges in Christ, For said our Lord in Luke 22:20; "This cup is the new testament ( covenant) in My blood, which is shed for you." Thus it is that "Gods assurances to man and man's obligations to God.
--It is a bond of union and communion among believers, the participation in the supper is a token and sign to faith of the union existing between Christ and the members of his body. Which is emphasised by Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:16 and 17

Great question!
I think the meaning is in the act, not in the elements.
I think that communion was intended to be taken as part of our meal when we are with other believer. If unbelievers are present, they have the opportunity to hear the good news when communion is celebrated... ...that Christ died for us ...that he spilled his blood for us ...that his body was broken for us ...that he rose again
I think we should re-adopt the way it was done before. It could be taken with the bread on hand & what is being drunk.
